Lake Forest College - Islam Post-Doc

Lake Forest College seeks applicants for a 2 year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Islamic Studies, funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). The Fellow will be based in the Religion Department, in conjunction with the Islamic World Studies Program (an inter-disciplinary program, under the direction of Dr. Ahmad Sadri, the James P. Gorter Chair of Islamic World Studies). We seek candidates with a love of teaching and a desire to experience the richness and rewards of a career at a liberal arts college.

The Fellow will be expected to teach 3 courses per academic year, ranging from introductory courses in the Islamic religious tradition to advanced courses in the Fellow’s specialty. This amounts to half-time teaching. With the other half of his or her working time, the Fellow will be expected to conduct post-doctoral research and to share this with the ACM and other scholarly communities. The College will provide support for participation in conferences and colloquia as well as the mentoring and enrichment workshops associated with the ACM program. The Fellow will expand offerings in the Religion Department and contribute to the development of the College’s new Islamic World Studies Program, generously funded by grants from James P. Gorter, life trustee, and the Mellon Foundation. Salaries are competitive and include research and travel stipends.

Northern Arizona University seeks a scholar of Islamic Studies for a shared appointment as tenure-track assistant professor of religious studies and anthropology. Requirements of the appointment include ability to teach undergraduate courses for both the Religious Studies Program in the Department of Humanities, Arts & Religion, and the Anthropology Department. For Religious Studies, ability to teach an undergraduate survey of the religious tradition of Islam is a requirement. It is expected that the successful candidate will also contribute other courses to both Religious Studies and Anthropology in the candidate’s areas of expertise, and will participate in the Anthropology M.A. program, as well as contributing to the missions of the departments, the College of Arts & Letters, the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, and the University. Oberlin College - Islam

The Department of Religion at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in classical and modern Islam, at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Research area, historical period and geographical area are open; however, knowledge of theory and methods in the fields of Religious Studies and Islamic Studies are essential. The incumbent will teach courses in the general areas of classical and modern Islam, along with a first-year seminar, an Introduction to Religion course, and an advanced seminar. Total course load is five courses per academic year. The incumbent will participate in the department's team-taught senior capstone colloquium. Occidental College - Islam History

Islamic World. The History Department at Occidental College invites applications for a regular tenure-track assistant professorship in the History of the Islamic World starting in fall of 2009. Otto-Friedrich-Universitat Bamberg, the Faculty of Humanities invites applications for a Professorship in Islamic Studies (tenured, W3 salary level)

The position is to be filled on October 2009. Candidates are expected to have an active command of modern standard Arabic and at least one more Islamicate language. They also should have practical research experience in Muslim countries. Their research interests should concern the history of religion and ideas and/or contemporary manifestations of Islam. In teaching, they will be required to cover the entire field of Islamic Studies with particular reference to current phenomena. Teaching requirements also involve an active participation in the BA program entitled "Islamic Orient", and the MA programs in "Islamic Studies" and "Interreligious Studies". The successful candidate is expected to engage in the development and improvement of BA and MA curricula, cooperation with the interdisciplinary university programs and centers, in particular the Center for Interreligious Studies (Zentrum für Interreligiöse Studien, ZIS), and the expansion of partnerships with universities in the Islamic world. It is further expected that the successful candidate is willing and able to assume an active role in all administrative matters pertaining to the department of Oriental Studies and to promote international exchange programs.

Prerequisites for employment are PhD and Habilitation (second dissertation), or a scientific record commensurate with the Habilitation. The postdoctoral requirements can also be fulfilled within the framework of a junior professorship or equivalent academic activities outside the university setting. Another essential requirement is a strong background in teaching and proven pedagocial skills.

Roanoke College - World Religions

Roanoke College Department of Religion and Philosophy announces an entry-level tenure-track position in World Religions beginning in August 2009. Area of specialty is open, though expertise in East Asian religion, South Asian religion, or Islam is desirable. University of Toledo - Imam Khattab Endowed Chair of Islamic Studies

The University of Toledo (a public institution with an enrollment of 20,000 students) invites applications for a tenure-track appointment to the Imam Khattab Chair in Islamic Studies. This endowed chair position will be filled at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Wake Forest University’s Department of Religion seeks a distinguished scholar of Islamic studies. We strongly favor making a senior appointment, but we would also consider exceptionally qualified candidates at the assistant or associate level. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2009. While the area of specialization is open, the successful applicant should demonstrate an understanding of the religious discourses of one or more contemporary Muslim societies in their cultural, social, political, and historical contexts. University of Wisconsin-Madison Religious Studies Program invites applications for a tenure-track position in Islamic Studies, specializing in Islamic scriptural literature and interpretation, at all levels beginning August 2009. This position is part of the UW Chancellor’s interdisciplinary cluster initiative in Religious Studies (http://www.clusters.wisc.edu/clusters/show/40). Candidates should be knowledgeable about the Qur’an, hadith, tafsir, and other relevant legal and literary works. Xavier University, Department of Theology, invites nominations and applications for the Helal, Hisham and Laila Edris ElSwedey Chair in Islamic Studies beginning August 2009. While the area of specialization is open, primary competency in the Islamic religious tradition is required. The successful candidate will be acquainted with the critical study of both early and modern Islam and will explore contemporary Muslim-Christian relations through scholarship, teaching, and community engagement. Candidates may be established in their academic careers with the rank of Associate or Full Professor and a record of distinguished scholarship and excellence in teaching, or, alternatively, they may be junior scholars who show excellent potential for teaching and scholarship. All candidates must possess the following required qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Islamic Studies, scholarly expertise in Arabic, critical knowledge of historical and contemporary texts, including the Qur’an and other foundational texts of the Islamic tradition. Additional competency in the comparative and interdisciplinary study of religion would be an asset. The holder of the chair will teach four courses each year and mentor others in the integration of units on Islam in other theology courses. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
